A feather is a great shape to paint, so organic yet forgiving. You don't even have to draw it yourself, you can trace a shape you like with baking parchment and a pencil. I added some Art Crayon and acrylic paint after it dried.</p>Lisa Fulmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02982929742509409956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4731940284648224425.post-84729773929583845842020-09-25T21:59:00.001-07:002020-11-06T22:03:57.807-08:00Postcard swap<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7PMxWc_pPk0mwcuEO1TQqnh74qEpfUnUf-REjz5hJyL4zZ7jodw844iMgPlyTJgSt7YqO95vmtdWTpVWdTy9CVn_qd7_UegAdUeirUt8ALxR4QA2Fha8vb7UuGL6MpjCFyPO383pmcvrs/s2048/BCAC9CE5-25E6-41D1-9013-781FB3310159_1_201_a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1854" data-original-width="2048" height="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7PMxWc_pPk0mwcuEO1TQqnh74qEpfUnUf-REjz5hJyL4zZ7jodw844iMgPlyTJgSt7YqO95vmtdWTpVWdTy9CVn_qd7_UegAdUeirUt8ALxR4QA2Fha8vb7UuGL6MpjCFyPO383pmcvrs/w640-h580/BCAC9CE5-25E6-41D1-9013-781FB3310159_1_201_a.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I participated in a large, nationwide postcard swap with a few hundred other artists. It was really fun - she talked about using your arms and leaning your body into the process to keep things loose and spontaneous. Use the color wheel to pick a good palette of colors and don't think too much beyond that. Let things evolve naturally - keep what you like, paint over what you don't like. She also showed lots of different tools and household objects for stamping, scraping, smudging and making interesting marks.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8CtrFB4j66E" width="320" youtube-src-id="8CtrFB4j66E"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's a slideshow of each stage of my process:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Draw swirls with a charcoal pencil - this was helpful to "break" the canvas and warm up<br /></li><li>Choose a palette and add color with a water-soluble art crayon (<a href="https://www.marabucreative-usa.com/our-products/mixed-media/art-crayon/" target="_blank">I use Marabu</a>). I also liked the white lines I got from pressing a little harder into the canvas - the edges of the brayer scraped some paint away.</li><li>Add more paint with stamping - I used teal blue with a cosmetic sponge (I have a thing for circles in my art) and I also added more marks with the art crayons</li><li>I pressed and twisted the edge of a paint jar lid into the centers of my stamped circle clusters to add the texture of circular outlines where the paint was heaviest. I randomly splattered drops of Aquamarine spray. Once that was dry, I finger-smudged in more shadows and highlights with art crayons. I experimented with dipping a <a href="https://masterpiecearts.shptron.com/c/alcohol-ink-art-panel-new" target="_blank">smooth 5x7" board</a> designed for alcohol inks into <a href="https://www.marabucreative-usa.com/our-products/marbling/" target="_blank">Easy Marble</a>, just partially on the bottom to create water. Then I added <a href="https://www.marabucreative-usa.com/our-products/mixed-media/alcohol-ink/" target="_blank">alcohol inks</a> above to make the land and sky. Pretty fun mediums to work with!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7nBKDgkoXe4CoDF-ePh-WKf-atrjzvWLLf3kC-zZ-oMeXc4kgyOF0_NzimXZu4ND8HQJ5Obiy2djrsto8wapdlZjUyatELl9DS-l6qaPZbfsfI5kx5Xpi4We5DDLdBeNRrkETkpPyr2K9/s1600/IMG_2349.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="967" data-original-width="1200" height="514" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7nBKDgkoXe4CoDF-ePh-WKf-atrjzvWLLf3kC-zZ-oMeXc4kgyOF0_NzimXZu4ND8HQJ5Obiy2djrsto8wapdlZjUyatELl9DS-l6qaPZbfsfI5kx5Xpi4We5DDLdBeNRrkETkpPyr2K9/s640/IMG_2349.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I created this 8x10" canvas panel for a "word of the year" art challenge with Marabu Creative and Stencil Girl. Using products from both companies, ten artists are making something to celebrate their word for 2020.<br />
<br />
My word is <b>meditate</b>. I need to do more of it every single day! This piece started as my "wipe board" during a Marabu demo I was doing at a <a href="https://lisalizalou.blogspot.com/2019/07/the-absence-of-color.html" target="_blank">local art store</a> last summer. It was filled with random spritzes and splatters of Art Spray colors. The great thing about <a href="https://www.marabucreative-usa.com/our-products/mixed-media/art-spray/" target="_blank">Marabu Art Spray</a> is its permanence when dry - you can work over it later without reactivating.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I rubbed black <a href="https://www.marabucreative-usa.com/our-products/mixed-media/art-crayon/" target="_blank">Marabu Art Crayon</a> all over the left side of the painted board, then removed some of the black through two Stencil Girl stencils - <a href="https://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencil-closed-leaves-rae-missigman-p/s502.htm" target="_blank">Closed Leaves</a> and <a href="https://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/mask-Rooted-in-Nature-Grass-David-Daniels-p/s740.htm" target="_blank">Rooted in Nature Grass</a> - with baby wipes.<br />
<br />
Then I rubbed white Art Crayon across the tips of the bristles of a large round stencil brush and brushed the color through the <a href="https://www.stencilgirlproducts.com/stencil-3-ring-seth-apter-p/m190.htm" target="_blank">3-Ring stencil</a> in a repeat pattern on the right side of the board.<br />
<br />
I finished it off with some splatters of metallic paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I wrote a poem about meditation that this piece illustrates:<br />
<br />
<i>In the darkness behind my eyes <br />Bits of light pop with glowing colors <br />Random thoughts are floating adrift <br />Like autumn leaves in the wind <br />Snippets of conversation link together <br />Some real…some imagined <br />My mind wanders as weary travelers do <br />Searching for focus, that emptiness <br />The simplicity of being nothing but present <br />And I marvel at the moments of clarity</i><br />
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>

Just experimenting with different sizes and shapes of brushes to see what effects I can get. One of my favorite surfaces is a canvas board and some of my favorite mediums are the Marabu Art Crayons and Art Sprays. These are some small pieces I created while demonstrating at an art store - experimenting with layering, blending and removing color. And baby wipes are one of my favorite tools!<br />
